When it comes to automobiles, no conversation can be complete without mention of the German car maker – BMW. Globally acclaimed for state-of-the-the-art engineering and breathtaking designs, BMW has rolled out a large number of models since its inception, and although almost every model generated substantial buzz in the auto world in its time and space, some have definitely stood the test of time better than others. In this post, we look at four such creations from the German automaker. You never know when you may find one of these among salvage BMW cars up for auction. Let’s begin!
1. BMW Isetta
Nicknamed the ‘bubble car’ because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows, Isetta is one of the most popular cars produced by BMW. It was introduced to the motoring press November 1953, in Turin. The car became a sensation as soon as it got launched as it was the first of its kind; a mass-produced car designed with the aim of achieving a fuel consumption efficiency rate of 3L/100 km. BMW sold a record 161,728 units of Isetta in the year 1955 and the Isetta fast became the World’s topmost selling car.
2. BMW 321
A successor to BMW 320, the BMW 321 is a six-cylinder sedan introduced in the year 1938. The sedan continued to be produced by the Bavarian firm until the production stopped in 1941. Production later resumed in 1945 at the Eisenach plant and lasted until 1950. The BMW 321 gave different body options to the consumers. For example, the door sedan came both as a sedan and a cabriolet. Between 1938 and 1941, BMW 321 customers could order the chassis and get a custom-built body manufactured at one of the many coachbuilders.
3. BMW 328
Powered by a 1971 cc M328 straight-6 engine, the BMW 328 is a sports car manufactured between 1936 and 1940. It was first introduced at the Eifelrennen race at Nurburguring in the year 1936. Not only did it win the race but it also went on to win several other races in the following years. Some of the notable races the car won are:
1. RAC Tourist Trophy in 1937
2. The Osterreichische Alphenfahrt in 1937
3. La Turbie in 1937
4. The RAC Rally in 1939
5. Stood overall fifth and first in class in 24 Hours of Le Mans in the year 1939
6. The Australian Grand Prix in 1948
One of its biggest achievements was being named by a worldwide panel of automotive journalists as one of the finalists for the Car of the Century.
4. BMW 507
The 2 door convertible BMW 507 is a roadster produced by BMW from 1956 to 1959. BMW suffered huge losses as it could only produce 252 cars against its initial target of exporting to the US at a rate of thousands per year. The reason why the sales targets were not achieved is the jump in price from an initial estimate of $5000 and ultimately landing at $10,500 due a major increase in production costs. The BMW 507, although a loss-making car for BMW and also responsible for taking the company to the edge of bankruptcy, is still one of the few that attracted a lot of celebrity buyers, including Hans Stuck, Georg “Schorsch” Meier, Elvis Presley, and a few more.
