As we edge closer to the 2021 winter boat show season, all indications are that powerboat sales will hold steady to records obtained in the past. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) announced 2019 retail sales of approximately 280,000 units, which is the second highest figure since 2007. The number does not account for used and repairable salvage boats for sale that were bought on platforms such as AutoBidMaster during the same period. As for 2020, NMMA expects the year to close at 300,000 new boat sales.
The Year at a Glance
2020 saw record growth in new boat sales in June, with July and August experiencing a slowdown. The sales picked up in September, with the month being the second highest single-month total of new powerboat sales in over a decade. The year is expected to close with record sales levels never seen since before the 2008-2009 recession.
Powerboat Categories
The powerboat categories that are largely responsible for driving new, used, and salvage boats for sale numbers through the roof include:
Personal watercraft – A gateway to boat ownership due to accessible entry-level price points.
Wake sport boats – Popular with new and younger boaters and used for wakesurfing and wakeboarding.
Cruisers – Measure between 22 and 32 feet and popular for entertaining, relaxing, and ‘cruising’.
Freshwater fishing boats – Covers walkarounds, bay/flat boats, pontoon boats, multi-hull powerboats, deck boats, aluminum fishing boats, center consoles, and bass boats.
In September, sales of freshwater fishing boats, saltwater fishing boats, and pontoon boats went up by double digits and accounted for 71% of new powerboat sales. According to size categories, the best performers are within the 27 foot and above category whose sales went up by 16% in September.
