To help narrow down your options, we share a list of five such popular classic cars from the 1970s you can find in our online classic car auctions.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Often referred to as “Britain’s First Supercar,” the Aston Martin V8 Vantage was notoriously famous for being able to do a whopping 170 mph back in the day. It could sprint from a complete standstill to 60 mph in about 5.3 seconds. Available as either a 2-door coupe or 2-door convertible, the V8 vantage came equipped with a 5.3-liter or 6.3-liter V8. The V8 Vantage Volante, the convertible model, had famously appeared in James Bond movies such as the 1987 film The Living Daylights.
Jaguar XJS
First released in 1975, the Jaguar XJS is a luxury grand tourer manufactured in three body styles – coupe, fixed-profile, and full convertible. The stunning exterior design gave the car a sporty appeal. It came equipped with a 5.3-liter V12, which while making it a gas guzzling monster, also provided exhilarating performance and made the XJS a driver’s delight.
Dodge Challenger
Based on the Plymouth Barracuda platform, the Dodge Challenger was amongst the last line of pony cars the American automobile industry saw. In production between 1970 and 74, the Challenger was available in both hardtop and convertible variants. It was made available in a whopping seven engine options, some of which include a 3-liter I6, 5.2-liter V8, 6.9-liter hemi, and 7.2-liter V8.
Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, first produced in the 1970s, now celebrates more than 40 years as a flagship off-road SUV. The production of the G-Class began in the early 1970s in Austria and was released in the spring of 1979. It was made available in four engine options and 2-door, 3-door, and 5-door body styles. The German manufacturer, however, did not officially export the car to the USA. Grey import specialists secretly imported the G-Class to the country and modified them.
BMW M1
Sold between 1978 to 1981, the M1 is the first-ever mass produced BMW car that came with a mid-engine layout. The sports car was available as a 2-door coupe and came with a RWD drivetrain. The M1 is powered by a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Apart from winning countless accolades in motorsports, the M1 also earned a spot among the Sports Car International’s list of top sports cars of the 1970s.
